Tricks of the Trade Part III: Renting vs. Buying Wedding Supplies
By Rachael Zebrowski, Vintage&Lace, Wedding Planner

When planning a wedding, there are going to be several items you will need on the big day that you probably don’t have just lying around the house. So, which items should you rent and which should you buy?

First, don’t assume that you only have one or the other option. Usually, you can either rent OR buy just about any item. For example, it is easy to find items like wedding chair covers (which brides often assume they have to rent) for purchase online and they may even be less expensive than if rented.

Renters have to cover the cost of storage, delivery, setup and cleaning in their prices; if you are comfortable doing these things yourself, buying is for you.

If you are going to buy, also consider shopping at local thrift stores. In my experience, most thrift stores have a variety of vases for around a dollar. Currently, mixing vases is in style; you can save big and be right on trend by bringing your own to your florist instead of renting their pricey options.

Another bonus of purchasing items yourself: you might be able to resell them to recover some or all of your costs.  A bride we know recently purchased a wide variety of vintage lace linens from local thrift stores and several other brides have already made her offers to purchase the linens after her big day!

To save big, think outside the rental box and explore the possibility of buying some of the smaller items for your wedding instead.
