Orchid Wedding Bouquets: Popular vs Unique

When I ask my Vintage&Lace brides to describe what they envision for their wedding, one of the most frequent requests I receive is: “I want my wedding to be unique.”

Like most brides, I cherish the different and celebrate anything rare - especially in people, fashion, and weddings. However, some elements I love are also very popular and commonly featured in weddings. Does that mean I avoid these items altogether?  Not at all!  I believe popular and unique are not mutually exclusive terms but can marry the best of both words.

I’ll use the oh-so-popular wedding flower, the orchid, as an example:

Orchids are one of the most requested wedding flowers, especially in tropical Hawaii! One might think the frequent use of this flower would be monotonous but it is quite the opposite. There are so many varieties of orchids (as highlighted in Orchids Orchids Orchids) and even the same orchid can look very different when paired with varying flowers, colors, and textures.

To demonstrate this diversity, all of the wedding bouquets in this slideshow contain orchids yet are strikingly different in style and form.

My point: do not be discouraged away from something you love just because it is popular. It doesn’t matter if your sister, your best friend or even your archenemy already used something you like at their wedding; don’t be shy about using the same thing if it is something you’ve always wanted for your own big day.

Just as no two bouquets are ever the same, no two brides are either. If you choose something popular or already done by someone in your circle, it’s ok! You will make it your own and it will be unique to you.

A Kukio Beach Wedding: Kevin ♥ Jill

Many couples opt to marry in Hawaii because they want an intimate, romantic beach wedding that is just the two of them. That's exactly what Kevin and Jill had in mind when they contacted Vintage&Lace about their January wedding.

#1. Your officiant shows up an hour late because they couldn't find the venue!


#2. The caterer runs out of buffet food before all your tables have been served! 


#3. Your drunk friend spills red wine on your white dress right before crashing into your wedding cake! 


#4. The airline loses your luggage with your dress inside on the way to your wedding destination!


#5. It starts to pour right before you walk down the aisle and you don't have a back-up ceremony site! 


#6. You requested a pale pink and ivory bouquet but the florist shows up with a red, white and blue one! 


#7. You forgot to get your marriage license so the whole thing isn't legal! 


These are just a few of the scary things that can happen at your wedding without proper planning and appropriate checklists! But don't worry; all of these can be avoided or corrected if you hire a competent wedding planner. 


A wedding planner will make sure the caterer has calculated the right amount of food for your wedding day and has a back up supply just in case your guests consume more than expected. They will also make sure that tables that might eat lighter, such as those with your grandparents, go first instead of your fiancés' college buddies who might overfill their plates before others reach the line.


Additionally, a competent wedding planner will always advise you to carry your wedding dress on the plane with you no matter how inconvenient it might be because you just can't run the risk of losing it in the airline shuffle.

 A good wedding planner will also keep an eye out for any guests that seem overly intoxicated or unruly and are starting to get out of hand. They can tactfully but assertively steer the guest back to their table and offer them a glass of water. 


They will also always advise you to have a back up rain location. Even if it hardly ever rains in your area, it is always good to have a "Plan B" and with weddings, it is always better to be safe rather than sorry! 


 Finally, a wedding planner will double check all the details with your vendors, such as the florist, to ensure that the details and colors are correct. When possible, they may even visit the floral shop the day before the wedding to see that the flowers are just what you asked for.

The Real Reason for a Celebration

The real reason to celebrate at a wedding... Love!  Sometimes the bride and groom as well as the many guests can fall victim to paying too much attention to the little things.  I love the little touches that make a wedding unique and special, but I want to say how important a detail it is when everyone in the room can feel the love shared between the bride and groom.  In fact, one of my favorite things to do at a wedding, whether coordinating, attending, or part of the wedding party is to watch the bride enter, then turn to look at the groom's face as he sees his bride for the first time on the wedding day.  It is truly a beautiful moment when they see each other and everyone in the room feels the love that is shared.

I was lucky enough to experience true love a little over a week ago.  I was at a wedding that the love between the bride and groom was evident to everyone attending.  My hope is that all the brides and grooms that are planning their weddings have found the love that these two have.  Love is something a wedding planner/designer/coordinator can't manage or fabricate, but we can build a beautiful ceremony and reception that can honor it.
